How About A Movie About Pink Floyd? (After Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody)
And if the band you're in starts playing different tunes
I'll see you on the dark side of the moon...

Pink Floyd, “Brain Damage”
They’ve already made a movie about Freddie Mercury and
Queen, so when is Hollywood really going to make a movie about the greatest rock band of all time,
Pink Floyd? There were talks then that Johnny Depp had been raring to make a
movie about Syd Barrett but it didn’t materialize; also, I had read once that a Pink
Floyd movie was already in the works then with Leonardo DiCaprio being tapped
to play as David Gilmour and Aston Kutcher as Roger Waters, but it also went
pfft, turning out to be just a product of some fans’ fertile imagination. Some were saying that the band members themselves were against making a movie about them. Syd’s
life, no doubt, was as colorful as Freddie’s. He founded Pink Floyd and wrote
their early songs. But on their way to superstardom, Syd went off the rails—he
had schizophrenia (which was exacerbated by his drug use), forcing the rest of the band to replace him.
If they're going to make a movie about Syd and Pink Floyd, these are the scenes we’d like to see in that
movie:
--how the members of the band met
--Syd showing symptoms of his illness and singing/playing
a different song from the rest of the band while they were performing; or Syd
staying still and not moving while the band performed
--the band picking David Gilmour to be Syd’s substitute/replacement
whenever he showed symptoms
--that fateful/painful day when the band decided not to
pick up Syd for a show and wholly replaced him with David, a development that made a lot of people think
that Pink Floyd was finished
--the band helping the still symptomatic Syd record his
solo album to help him make a comeback
--Syd’s unannounced visit while Pink Floyd was recording
Wish You Were Here (an album dedicated to Syd) and the band not recognizing him
at first because he had grown fat and had shaved his hair and eyebrows and
wouldn’t speak
Bohemian Rhapsody is doing reportedly well at the box
office so expect more Hollywood rock band movies in the future, and hopefully,
a movie about Pink Floyd (not necessarily centered on Syd) would be one of
them. David and Roger’s legendary quarrel and dislike for each other would
certainly make a good story, especially the part where Roger wanted the court to dissolve the band
name Pink Floyd so David couldn't use it.
Everyone can dream, yes.
Note: Photo above is the only photo shoot that had David and Syd together. Both are seated at the back, with David on the left. At the front row, from left, are Nick, Roger and Rick. Syd went batshit not long afterwards.
