[Nothing But] Flowers

Years ago
I was an angry young man
And I'd pretend
That I was a billboard
Standing tall
By the side of the road
I fell in love
With a beautiful highway…

Interestingly, someone on Facebook wants the words “(Nothing But) Flowers” to be her father’s epitaph on his gravestone, with the woman claiming that it was a song by Pink Floyd, her dad's favorite. I wanted to comment and correct her but I got shy. “(Nothing But) Flowers” of course is a song by Talking Heads, and one of my favorite songs, IMO the best song of Talking Heads. I have posted it multiple times on my FB timeline.  It’s a sarcastic and funny song about the narrator being disappointed that technology and industrialism have been overrun by nature, that a lot of people now prefer trees and plants and flowers over real estate.  (This was a Pizza Hut, now it’s all covered with daisies…)

It’s a perfect song, it has pefect lyrics, perfect melody, perfect guitars, perfect vocals and perfect official music video.

I don’t know if it’s an ideal epitaph, but then, to each his own.

My epitaph? It’d probably be a Pink Floyd lyrics.
