A FEW MORE NOTES ABOUT SUICIDE

One of the most frequented entries in this blogsite is the article I wrote entitled Kurt Cobain, Ernest Hemingway And A Few Notes About Suicide, which is sort of a proof that a lot of people around the world are fascinated with suicide and that they always search the net for information about it.

Sadly, here in the Philippines, almost everyday, a couple of news about people committing suicide are reported on the papers. Just a few weeks ago, a woman jumped in front of the speeding LRT train to the horror of the passengers. Luckily, she survived. The woman said she couldn’t bear life’s hardships anymore and wanted to escape it. And as I was writing this, a great debate on whether a certain woman committed suicide or was murdered was shaking the nation.

Last week, Holy Monday to be exact, some of our neighbors were baffled when a foul place permeated the neighborhood. The Sherlock Holmes in them was awakened and they investigated. It turned out that a 38-year old man who lived in the house immediately adjacent to our house committed suicide by hanging himself. He killed himself Saturday and his body was discovered only on Monday, inside a vacant maid’s room in the basement of the house. His family told the police that they thought the victim was just out looking for a job. The victim, who was single and a loner, had been despondent for being jobless. He didn’t leave a sucide note.

Men are always prone to suicide more than women. But when women do it, they always prefer poisoning themselves or getting overdosed with pills. If there’s no poison or pills around, they would prefer to cross into the afterlife via slashing their wrist. They rarely choose guns because, believe it or not, it will disfigure them. Women, they still want to look good even when they’re inside the coffin. Another reason why women shun gun when killing themselves is that not a lot of them know how to handle guns.

Men love to send themselves into kingdom via guns and by jumping from the top of tall buildings. Even when committing sucide, men love action and thrills.

A lot of people who killed themselves left suicide notes. Vincent Van Gogh, the world-renowned artist who struggled with depression and insanity all his life, left one addressed to his brother before shooting himself in the chest. Kurt Cobain, famous rock musician, also left a lengthy suicide note, writing, among other things, his sadness on becoming hateful towards all humans in general and about his fears that his daughter “who reminds me too much of what I used to be, full of love and joy, kissing every person she meets because everyone is good and will do her no harm. And that terrifies me to the point to where I can barely function. I can't stand the thought of Frances becoming the miserable, self-destructive, death rocker that I've become.”

He ended the note with a declaration of his love for his wife and daughter.

Majority of suicide notes end with the victims’ declaration of their love to their loved ones, which perplex a lot of people, for if they truly love the people they’d be leaving behind, their loved ones who would definitely grieve over they death, why in the hell would they still commit suicide at all?

Suicide will always be the ultimate act of cowardice.

Ron,

Act of cowardice ? I have my doubts. For instance, in Japan, it could be an act of heroism for those Kamikazi Pilots who dived to their deaths together with their Zeros to inflict damage on enemy warships, or the Samurai Warrior committing Seppuku for lose of face, or those young Muslims who rig their bodies with explosives, just to go to heaven in order to savor the supposed 72 young virgins waiting for them.

To the terminally ill, whose body is wracked with pain, or to the down & out with no future, Suicide is a form of release in this cruel world.

But I have my doubts in the case of the late Mrs. Failon.

There are few 'Kamikaze-minded' persons these days, most of those who've killed themselves did it because they're running away from something.

I, too, sense something is amiss with the case of Mrs. Failon.

Ron,

To some, suicide is one way of escaping the realities in life. There are many reasons too why a certain person committed a suicide. Love, honor, poverty, guilt, shame, etc, etc. But committing suicide just to kill many lives is unforgiven. Ang karamihan sa gumagawa nito ay iyong sobrang na-brainwash sa kanilang pinaniniwalaang ideology, religion, o kaya ay iyong nauto na once they did it, sa "heaven" sila mapupunta. To me, being a fanatic is next to insanity and prone to any suicidal act.

But I'm sorry for him, a dead person tell no more tales at ang "doubt" na iniwan sa kanya nito ay tataglayin na niya habang buhay.

Porfirio,

Running away from poverty by means of killing yourself is still an act of cowardice.

Arman,
