David Gilmour Will Rattle That Lock So You Can Lose Your Chains

Pink Floyd fans, or many of them, have another reason to rejoice.

David Gilmour, the band’s guitarist extraordinaire, has a new album coming out this September, entitled “Rattle That Lock,” and as a teaser, the title track has been unveiled, which will be the first single off the album.  According to David, the melody of “Rattle That Lock,” the single, was inspired by the jingle of a French railway station while the lyrics (co-written by David’s wife, Polly) was inspired by John Milton’s “Paradise Lost,” an epic poem that narrates the plot of Satan and his fellow fallen angels to annihilate the earth and all of mankind.

The song, which has an upbeat and celebratory tone and a soaring chorus (and fantastic guitar solos from David as usual), as expected, was met with diverse opinions, some like it, others despise it, claiming that it sounds nothing like the signature Pink Floyd sound. But David has always maintained that he’s finished with Pink Floyd and that he’s never going to write a song just to please his former band’s fans.

Sadly, the fans will never be finished with Pink Floyd.

But the song is quite good, it is pleasant to the ears, and David Gilmour’s voice remains fantastic. But imagine if David gave this melody to Roger Waters and asked him to write lyrics on it based on John Milton’s poem and to arrange it. It'd definitely be one hell of a song (pun intended). Look what happened to "Comfortably Numb" and "Wish You Were Here..."

But in fairness,  “Rattle That Lock,” the single, has a nice, simple message (as per my interpretation): be free, be happy and lose all those baggage that are dragging you down.

Rattle That Lock

[Verse 1]
Whatever it takes to break
Gotta do it
From the burning lake or the eastern gate
You'll get to it

[Chorus 1]
Rattle that lock and lose those chains
Rattle that lock

[Verse 2]
Let's go do it
Have it all our way
Go back to where we blew it
And lose our heads along the way

[Chorus 2]
So long sin, au revoir chaos
If there's a heaven, it can wait

[Guitar solo]

[Bridge]
Rattle that lock
Lose those chains

[Verse 3]
And all the other travellers
Become phantoms to our eyes
Furius and his Revellers
Fallen angels in disguise

[Chorus 3]
No discord, chance or rumour
Is going to enter of this place

[Verse 4]
So, let's get to it
It's calling like a flame
Through the darkness and the night
The world suspended on a golden chain
