Viral

Actress Angel Locsin’s photos, showing her obvious weight gain, suddenly went viral a few days ago. Hearteningly, netizens (most likely because of her philanthropic activities in the past and during this pandemic) are showing nothing but love for her. I don’t know, but the stress/anxiety this lockdown/pandemic’s bringing us is making everyone either thin or fat. Chubby or not, Angel’s heart and soul remain sexy.

Another photo that went viral is that of a 35-year-old man riding a bicycle with training wheels. Again, majority of netizens gave him not mocking but love. (Jeez, this lockdown is also making a lot of people kind and nice). The man said that he got tired of walking to work (he lives in Manila and works in Makati as a messenger and public transpo is almost nil because of the lockdown) so he thought of buying a bicycle. But there was a minor problem: he doesn’t know how to ride a bike. So he bought one with training wheels (the kind your eight-year old kid rides). He doesn’t mind some people mocking him, he said, the important thing is he gets to provide for his family. Kudos.

Another thing that’s setting the social media on fire is the issue of rape. Some say that rape happens because of girls wearing sexy clothes. This is wrong, of course. Rape happens not because a girl is wearing short shorts or someone is watching too much porn or reading too much erotic novels, it happens because there are rapists, thugs who have this mindset that it is a woman’s duty to satisfy them every time they have a boner. You can only complain about what a woman is wearing when she comes to a formal occasion, e.g. a mass or your kid’s christening, wearing a two-piece bikini. And no, the news about a cow being repeatedly raped by a man doesn’t prove some people’s fallacy that “you go out wearing nothing, you risk being raped” is true.

An article is going around socmed saying that the coronavirus (the one that’s causing COVID-19) is weakening and has become less dangerous and could disappear on its own without a vaccine. Possibly true because the death rates around the world are falling down and the recoveries going up. But then, you look at today's COVID-19 stats here in the Philippines and all your newly-acquired hopes are smashed: 1,150 confirmed new cases  today. There are now 31,825 cases here with 1,186 deaths, that's around 4% case fatality rate, meaning, when you get it, there's 4% chance that you'd shake hand with the Grim Reaper. Still quite high. It will probably go down in the coming days but still, the virus remains highly contagious and could still mess you up, so don’t ever let your guard down: wear that mask, wash those hands and stay away from people who are constantly hurting you, er, I mean, practice physical distancing.

Yesterday, Sarcasm, a Facebook page I follow, posted this meme that said, “Block Means Love, Sometimes.” And paradoxically and astoundingly, some commenters tended to agree.  The meme’s either a baloney to the highest level or I am so much loved. Wait, the Facebook’s page name is “Sarcasm.”

     Keep safe and keep sane.
