Luck, Strange, David, and Roger

David Gilmour, former Pink Floyd guitarist and vocalist, released a new album yesterday, September 6, 2024. Entitled Luck and Strange, it is his fifth studio album. Last time he released an album was 2015 (Rattle That Luck). David Gilmour reportedly said that he considered Luck and Strange his best work since Dark Side of the Moon, which is considered by many as Pink Floyd’s greatest album, and which I consider the greatest album of all time (The Wall comes close).

I listened to Luck and Strange yesterday, and nope, the album doesn’t come close to DSOTM, or to The Wall, for that matter, or to Wish You Were Here or Animals or even Meddle. But don’t get me wrong, Luck and Strange is a good album. “Scattered,” “Sings,” “The Piper’s Call” and “Between Two Points (which his daughter sang)” are good. It would just be sacrilegious to say that it as good as the aforementioned Pink Floyd classic albums.

The thing with David Gilmour solo albums is that he doesn’t write his lyrics (his wife is always the major lyricist) so the songs don’t sound authentic and heartfelt, like he’s just singing on behalf of his wife or whoever the lyricist of the song. Even the melodies, he doesn’t compose most of them.

Roger Waters (former Pink Floyd bassist and singer) wrote most, if not all, the lyrics (and melodies) on all Pink Floyd classic albums.

And Mister Waters is a genius when it comes to writing lyrics.

Alas, Mister Waters is currently busy ranting against Israel, and has no plan, it seems, of writing another album.
