Day of Souls
Today is All Souls’ Day, and a lot of people believe that during this day, ghosts and
other spirits, good and evil, roam the earth. I am still skeptical when it
comes to ghosts, but I had some experiences that may be called ghostly.
Many years
ago, while my mother, bless her soul, was still alive, I was watching TV in the
living room at 1 AM, the light was off, when I heard the door of my mother’s
room opening. I heard what I assumed was my mother’s footsteps going out of the
room and heard the door closing behind her.
I
immediately turned the TV off, she hated whenever we slept late, especially if
we were only watching TV.
Her
footsteps went to the bathroom a few feet away, and then, I heard the bathroom’s
door closing, heard the switch being turned on and saw the light coming out.
I stayed in
the couch in the living room, making sure my mother wouldn’t see me when she came back to her room and also making
sure that I’d see her when she marched out of the bathroom so I could continue
watching, never taking my eyes off the direction of the bathroom—and waited.
Five
minutes, ten minutes, twenty minutes passed, and she wasn’t coming out of the
bathroom.
I finally stood
up, quietly went to the bathroom, the door was wide open, the light was on, but
there was no one there—my mother was soundly asleep in the room.
The next
morning, I asked my mom if she got out of the room to go to the bathroom at 1
AM in the morning, and she said no, she did not.
And like
Jim Halpert in The Office, immediately
after she said that, I glanced at the (invisible) camera, looking bemused.
A similar incident,
I was watching TV late again in the living room upstairs, around 1 AM again.
There was a stair that led to the living room. And while watching, I clearly
heard footsteps (the TV's volume was really low) going up the stairs and someone (who owned the footsteps)
clearing his throat twice, and it sort of perplexed me because I knew no one was downstairs, and the front door was
already locked. I waited to see who was coming up—and no one came.
I went to
the stair, no one was there. I went downstairs and confirmed that there was no
one there.
I quickly
turned the TV off and rushed to my room.
