Jolina Magdangal and the Unfortunate Stagnation of One's Pop Culture Savviness

I have realized that I’m stuck to a bygone era. My Pinoy pop culture savviness has been stagnant. You see, yesterday, I stumbled upon this Facebook post about a local movie starring this young celebrity, the comments were gushing on how huge and uber-famous this young local celebrity, that he was so famous that it would be a felony not to know him, that he was enough to watch the movie, never mind if the story and everything else about the film was garbage—and I had no idea who he was. I Googled him, and it turned out that he was a member of a local band which songs I wasn’t familiar with.

This band’s popularity, netizens are saying, is so massive that people who are unfamiliar with their songs should be arrested and should be meted the punishment of life imprisonment.

And so I am now in hiding.

It appears that my local celebrity radar had conked out decades ago. A few days ago, I was asked about my favorite contemporary teenage star and I answered Jolina Magdangal.
