Movies and Love and Its Side Effects

Accidentally found the card (lifetime membership in Video City, a video rental shop) above yesterday while rummaging through a drawer of mine containing junks. Can't remember when I became a member, probably in mid 90s. I was also a member of several small video rental shops in our place. My favorite movie of all time? Probably The Godfather (1972). Home Alone (1990) is a close second. Lol. I remember reading the The Godfather book first and getting enthralled by it, I didn’t know that the movie was better than the book, which as movies-based-on-books go, was a rare occurrence.

Last movie I watched, just last Saturday, was Obsession (2025), a horror movie about a guy in love with a co-worker, who obviously has no intention of initiating a romantic relationship with him. He then stumbled upon a magical, supernatural thingy that grants a wish (an old, overused trope, I know), just one wish (a genie is much more generous, obviously), one that can’t be reversed, and he quickly makes a wish: make the girl fall utterly in love with him.

     Wish granted.

The girl starts obsessing on him.

But there are side effects, disturbing at first, and then become evil: the girl starts acting strange… and then diabolical. For example, she cooks his dead, decaying cat and lovingly gives it to him as his meal. The wish eventually ruins his life, the girl’s life and their friend’s lives—so yeah, be careful what you wish for.

Lesson here is, If the girl you like doesn’t like you back, in spite of you confessing your feelings and proving your love for her with words and actions, but she responds not by properly communicating with you but by ignoring you, and by, for example, uploading sentimental social media posts and thirst traps for, you suspect, another man, you need to go away and stay away. That woman is determined. Lol. Don’t go looking for a supernatural solution, especially if you have a cat and you love it.

You can’t put a spell on love. Love, by itself, is already magical and supernatural.

Video City has disappeared, but these streaming apps, Netflix and the likes, no doubt, are so much better and convenient.
