Intramuros And A Monster In Netflix

Yesterday, I went solo biking in Intramuros (Latin for “within the walls”), and the place of course is one of the nicest biking spots in the whole of Metro Manila. It has nice and historical scenery, of course. And these days? It's quiet and has few cars and people. I was there before nine in the morning, it wasn’t hot so I was planning to have my lunch there but the clouds darkened at around eleven and my bike was already making some strange noises, probably needed some washing, so I just went home and turned Netflix on.

Netflix has been churning out new movies (and series) left and right that people are now suspecting that they knew beforehand that a pandemic would hit us and most people would be staying at home and would be needing, well, new movies and series to binge on.

Some of the new releases I’ve found time to watch are:

#ALIVE: A Korean zombie movie wherein a man is trapped inside his apartment alone while a zombie apocalypse is breaking out. Train To Busan (2016) is a lot better. My rating for #Alive: 2 stars out of 5.

Bloodshot: An action-fantasy movie in which a slain soldier is resurrected and given superpowers. The movie offers nothing new. You’d be better off rewatching your Avengers movies. 2 stars out of 5.

The Devil All The Time: An all-star cast  and a well-acted psychological-thriller movie in which a young man is determined to protect the people he loves from all the evil that surrounds them. Dark and twisted. Downside: no story arc, really. 4 stars out of 5.

Enola Holmes: A movie about Sherlock’s younger sister, Enola, who is also a smart detective like him. A little bland and unexciting for me. 2 stars out of 5.

The Social Dilemma: A documentary about social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc) and the risks and dangers—according to some of their own creators and prime movers— they pose to the people. Fascinating. 4 stars out of 5.

American Murder: The Family Next Door: Another documentary, this time about a husband (33 years old at the time of murder) who kills his pregnant wife (34) and two young daughters (aged 3 and 4) in 2018 because he has a sexier, prettier and younger girlfriend. And he wants a baggage-free new life with her. Yes, this man is a monster, more horrible than the zombies in #Alive. 4 stars out of 5.
