THESE SONGS WILL MAKE YOU JUMP FROM THE ROOFTOP OF A TALL BUILDING DUE TO UNPARALLELED LONELINESS

"All the lonely people,
Where do they all come from ?
All the lonely people,
Where do they all belong?"

Every time I enter a music forum, I always stumble upon a thread that lists what the members think are the saddest or most depressing songs for them. The song that always gets mentioned is Gloomy Sunday. A song that has driven a lot of people to commit sucide, or so they say.

Most of the songs I listen to, I’m starting to notice, are quite sad so maybe I should also make my list of saddest/most depressing songs, too.

So here’s my list of imported songs (I will probably tackle local songs next time; I don't know why but my friend says that any song by Judy Ann Santos and Piolo Pascual is depressing) that will either convince you to jump from the rooftop of a twenty-two storey building or drink three glasses of Baygon insecticide after eating a mouthful of Racumin. Yes, this world is such a lonely place.

10. LAST KISS by PEARL JAM – This song is about a guy driving his car with his girlfriend. They met an accident and while his girlfriend was dying inside their wrecked car, he gave her his last kiss.

9. WISH YOU WERE HERE by PINK FLOYD – Syd Barrett, Pink Floyd’s founder, became mentally deranged while the band was just starting. The band dedicated this song to him. But you can also interpret the song as about someone being abandoned by his/her beloved who is seeking greener pastures. Yup, you can dedicate this song to an OFW loved one. Great song.

8. ONE by METALLICA – A soldier, severely injured in war, is wishing for death while he is confined in a hospital, begging God to let him die.

7. SEASONS IN THE SUN by NIRVANA – This sad song (about a death row convict saying bye-bye to his loved ones) became more sad and heartbreaking when Nirvana covered it. It was as if Kurt Cobain was saying goodbye to the world through this song.

6. ME AND A GUN by TORI AMOS – Tori, who will always be on my list of world’s most beautiful women, was raped while a gun was pointed at her. She tells that tragic incident through this a cappella song.

5. THE BLOWER'S DAUGHTER by DAMIEN RICE – Another song that tells of a true event, Damien Rice, while trying to learn to play flute, fell in love with his teacher’s daughter. Obviously, what he felt was unrequited. Probably the saddest love song, what with Rice’s tormented vocals.

4. PLEASE, PLEASE, LET ME GET WHAT I WANT by THE SMITHS – Most of The Smiths’ songs need Prozac but this is certainly one of their most depressing. "For once in my life, let me get what I want. Lord knows, it would be the first time,” Morrissey sings.

3. ELEANOR RIGBY by THE BEATLES – The most popular ode-to-loneliness song. An immortal song.

2. NO SURPRISES by RADIOHEAD – Radiohead is another group that creates mostly depressing songs. This song is about someone who’s had enough of heartaches, disappointments and bad government and is now thinking of committing suicide. Fantastic song, this is.

And the most depressing song of all time for me:

1. ALONE AGAIN NATURALLY – by GILBERT O’ SULLIVAN – The song’s about a man who, after being stood up in a church by his would-be-bride, is now thinking of killing himself by climbing up a building and throwing himself off from the rooftop. The man, who now doubts if God really exists, also recalls other sad events in his life like the death of his father which led to his mother’s depression and eventual death. This song’s a certified depressant. Don’t listen to it when you’re depressed, it will depress you more, especially when you’re drunk.

I can still remember one 'funny' incident that involves this song which happened a few weeks after my mother passed away. I was in an FX taxi when this song started playing from the car stereo. Instantly, I got teary-eyed. I was almost weeping when the song reached the part where the singer was singing about his deceased parents, I had to cover my face with my handkerchief so the other passengers would not know that I was crying. And I'm not really an emotional person. Like the mother in the song, my mother got depressed and sickly when my father died. My mom being sick was our family’s most difficult time...

Chocolates, they say, is a great anti-depressant.

As of now, I'm also experiencing the saddest moment in my life but I dont want to elaborate it further. Thanks for posting those list of songs so that I can avoid it to listen because who knows, tumalon na lang akong bigla sa rooftop ng isang building. Anyway, I took your advice seriously by eating a chocolate as anti- depressant. Thank You Ron, and more power to you.
Arman,

Ako nga, eh...I've been experiencing loads and tons of problems for many years now, pero heto, buhay pa, still surviving at lumalaban sa mga hamon ng buhay.

I know, marami ka na ring nalampasang problema.

Cheer up and be happy!

Arman And Jeff,

Iyong solusyon, kailangan mo pang pagsikapang hanapin.

But once you find it, it will always be very rewarding.

He he.

ron,
may lulungkot pa ba sa awiting 'mr. lonely'? i've heard lots of interpretation if this song including rap, and still it sounds lonely.
oh. maybe the message was implanted during my youth when my only diversion back then was reading komiks and listening to a radio soap opera---what else but mr. lonely.

He he.
may lulungkot pa ba sa kantang 'HINDI KITA MALILIMUTAN'
hehehehe
