Grabbin' Some Afternoon Delight

Yesterday, a video for the song “Afternoon Delight” appeared on my Facebook News Feed and gave me a smile. This song was the number one song in 1976, probably the only song about sex that reached number one and was even nominated for three Grammys (including Song of the Year). The song is very catchy (and wholesome-sounding, one that your six-year old daughter would love to sing in her class in front of her conservative but clueless teacher, thinking that it's a song about having some desserts, like ice cream or cake, in the afternoon) and has wonderful vocal harmonies but yes, the witty lyrics are all about sex, or specifically, afternoon sex.

Thinkin' of you's workin' up my appetite
Looking forward to a little afternoon delight
Rubbin' sticks and stones together makes the sparks ignite
And the thought of rubbin' you is getting so exciting
Sky rockets in flight
Afternoon delight

Are there naughtier lyrics than that? The whole song’s just exploding with sexual innuendo. The song again penetrated the people’s consciousness when the hit comedy movie Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004) spoofed it in their “What is love?” scene. The song has been referenced a lot in pop culture.

And the whole day passed with me happily and innocently singing the song repeatedly, even though the only delight I get in the afternoon are naps.

    Sky rockets in flight...
