I HAVE BECOME COMFORTABLY NUMB!

“Look at the lyrics, look at the title, listen to the melody, no doubt about it, it’s the ultimate drug addict’s song,” commented our friendly neighborhood addict who ran off with Darna’s bato. (See my last post re Dyesebel.)

Many critics of Pink Floyd who used to attack them as a drug-crazed group have always used this song as a proof that members of Pink Floyd were drug addicts. And that they have encouraged lots of their fans to become drug addicts also through this song. Until now, a lot of rock music enthusiasts think that this song is about illegal drugs. They think that the song is about a man who overdosed on drugs and is being revived by a doctor.
Members of Pink Floyd have always denied that they were drug users. The song (which is included in their double-CD album, The Wall) is about Roger Water’s (the writer of the song) experience while the band was about to do a concert. He was not feeling well (unknown to him, he was suffering from hepatitis at that time) but the doctor, who was a friend of the show’s producer, gave him tranquilizers to ease the pain instead of giving him the right medicines for the hepatitis and asking him to rest so he could proceed with the concert. So while the show was going on, Waters felt very numb but comfortable (because the drugs that the doctor gave him sort of made him high.) After the show, his condition aggravated and he was rushed to the hospital.

This is the song that got me hooked on Pink Floyd. This is one of their most popular and greatest songs. The lyrics, the guitars, the vocals were all great. This is one of the greatest rock songs you’ll ever hear.
And don't forget, always say no to drugs!
COMFORTABLY NUMB
By Pink Floyd
Hello.
Is there anybody in there?
Just nod if you can hear me.
Is there anyone home?
Come on, now.
I hear you're feeling down.
Well I can ease your pain,
Get you on your feet again.
Relax.I need some information first.
Just the basic facts:Can you show me where it hurts?
There is no pain, you are receding.
A distant ship's smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're sayin'.
When I was a child I had a fever.
My hands felt just like two balloons.
Now I got that feeling once again.
I can't explain, you would not understand.
This is not how I am.
I have become comfortably numb.
Ok.Just a little pinprick.
There'll be no more --Aaaaaahhhhh!
But you may feel a little sick.
Can you stand up?
I do believe it's working. Good.
That'll keep you going for the show.
Come on it's time to go.
There is no pain, you are receding.
A distant ship's smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're sayin'.
When I was a child I caught a fleeting glimpse,
Out of the corner of my eye.
I turned to look but it was gone.
I cannot put my finger on it now.
The child is grown, the dream is gone.
I have become comfortably numb.
